Large Hand-Carved Arduin Stone Mortar, Southern Netherlands, 17th/18th Century
€ 725,00
Southern Netherlands, 17th–18th Century
A striking and exceptionally substantial antique mortar, hand-carved from a single block of arduin (blue-grey hardstone) and distinguished by four pronounced rounded ears around the rim.
The massive, primitive form and irregularly hewn exterior retain the character of the original craftsmanship, while the deeply worn interior bears extensive evidence of generations of use. The softly weathered surface and natural patination further enhance its sculptural quality.
With its monumental proportions, this piece can be appreciated both as a historic functional object and as a strong decorative architectural element.
