19th-Century Italian Terracotta Relief of the Madonna in Prayer

An evocative Italian terracotta wall relief depicting the Virgin Mary in prayer, her hands joined and head gently inclined in quiet contemplation. The finely modelled face, flowing drapery and delicately rendered folds lend the composition a remarkable sense of grace and devotional serenity.

Behind the Madonna, an ox and a donkey appear within a rustic architectural setting, alluding to the Nativity and adding narrative depth to the scene.

Executed in warm, naturally patinated terracotta, the oval relief is hollow-cast and displays a beautiful sculptural presence.
