Vienna Bronze Toad, circa 1900
€ 395,00
Austrian Vienna Bronze Toad, circa 1900–1925
A finely cast and beautifully patinated bronze sculpture of a naturalistically modelled toad, attributed to the Vienna School and dating to the early 20th century. The compact figure displays remarkable attention to detail, from its richly textured, warty skin to its alert posture. The underside bears an unidentified cast monogram within a circular cartouche.
The sculpture captures a male toad during the breeding season, with its throat fully inflated in the act of calling. This distinctive vocal sac is an anatomical feature used to amplify its mating call and gives the sculpture an unusual sense of movement and character, freezing a fleeting moment from nature in bronze.
The warm, deep brown patina and high-quality casting reflect the craftsmanship associated with the finest Central European animal bronzes of the period.
