A pair of Baroque angel figures
€ 1.450,00
Pair of Baroque Carved Wood Musical Angels, South German/Tyrolean, 18th Century.
A charming pair of polychrome and parcel-gilt carved wood angels, each depicted mid-flight and playing music — one on a shawm-type wind instrument, the other on a lute. Carved in the round with deeply grooved feather wings, softly modeled cherubic faces, and characteristic curled hair, these figures are typical of South German or Tyrolean workshops of the 18th century, likely originally created as flanking decoration for an altar or retable.
The original polychrome surface shows attractive wear consistent with age, with the ivory-toned flesh tones and traces of gilding remaining visible beneath a naturally distressed patina. Dynamic, twisting poses give both figures a sense of movement and lightness typical of the late Baroque style.
A lovely decorative pair, equally suited to a devotional or secular interior, with genuine age and charm.
