€ 1.950,00
A hand-coloured copperplate engraving titled Napoléon le Grand, one of the most celebrated imperial portraits of the Napoleonic era. It shows Napoleon I in a full-length portrait, facing front, standing before his throne in coronation robes.
The original painting is Napoleon I as Emperor by François Gérard (1770–1837), an oil on canvas produced in 1805 under the First French Empire. Gérard initially created it as an official portrait for Napoleon’s throne room at the Tuileries Palace; it now hangs at the Palace of Versailles.
The engraver was Auguste Gaspard Louis Boucher-Desnoyers (1779–1857), one of the most eminent French engravers of his era. The inscriptions on this print: “F. Gérard pinxit anno 1805” (painted by Gérard in 1805) and “Augte. Boucher Desnoyers sculpsit” (engraved by Desnoyers).
