Exceptional French Nevers Faience Jardinière by Trousseau & Cie., circa 1885–1894
Exceptional late 19th-century French faience jardinière by Trousseau & Cie. of Nevers, dating to the late 19th century, circa 1885–1894.
Of substantial and highly decorative form, the jardinière features a finely painted blue and white pastoral landscape, depicting a picturesque waterside scene with a house, trees, a winding path and distant landscape. The central reserve is framed by elaborate hand-painted borders and ornamental blue decoration.
The imposing vessel is distinguished by its sculptural lion-mask handles, richly decorated molded lower section and raised pedestal, creating a particularly architectural and theatrical presence. The combination of painted landscape, molded ornament and figural elements is characteristic of the artistic faience produced in Nevers during this period.
In the inside it retains its original underglaze Trousseau & Cie. mark, including the characteristic green “nœud vert” (green knot), the designation “TC”, “N” for Nevers and additional original workshop markings.
A rare and highly decorative example of 19th-century French Nevers faience.
