French First Empire Inkstand with Eagle in Bronze on Siena Marble, circa 1810

€ 2.350,00

A rare and highly decorative French First Empire inkstand, circa 1810, in gilt and patinated bronze mounted on a richly veined Siena marble base.

The rectangular Siena marble base is raised on four gilt-bronze feet and fitted with two cylindrical inkwell holders, retaining their original glass liners and hinged covers. At the center is a finely modelled Imperial Eagle with outstretched wings, its talons grasping the thunderbolt (foudre), an important emblem of Napoleonic France.

The eagle is mounted upon a stepped Siena marble pedestal with finely chased gilt-bronze palmette and acanthus ornament. The front of the base incorporates a recessed pen tray.

The striking contrast between the warm golden veining of the Siena marble, the gilt bronze and the dark patina of the eagle is particularly characteristic of the French First Empire taste.

A fine and unusual example of an early nineteenth-century French Empire desk object, combining strong Napoleonic symbolism with richly executed decorative mounts.

France, First Empire, circa 1810.
